Gregory Gundberg

Gregory Gundberg, CMB Program Graduate Student

Gregory is interested in how C. elegans regulates mitochondrial inheritance in their germ cells. He received his B.S. from Fitchburg State University and his M.S. from Lehigh University. Before joining the CMB graduate program, Gregory utilized a bioengineering approach to explore how stem cells utilize miRNAs to orchestrate differentiation. Prior to that, he was investigating how axolotls regulate the DNA damage response pathway during limb regeneration. In his free time, Gregory enjoys spending time with his dog, Bean, doing arts and crafts, and kayaking in the summer. gundberg@wisc.edu

Michael Hertel

Michael Hertel, Research Specialist

Michael is studying the formation and extension of intracellular tubes using the C. elegans excretory cell as model. He received a B.S. in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics from UW-Parkside and an M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Cellular and Molecular Biology from UW-La Crosse. In his free time, Michael likes to play video games with friends, compete in trivia nights, and watch sports. mrhertel@wisc.edu

Ellie Kothbauer

Ellie Kothbauer, Undergraduate Lab Aide

Ellie is an undergrad majoring in Biomedical Engineering. In her free time Ellie enjoys hanging out with friends, attending Badger sport events and hiking. She also loves listening to podcasts, with her favorite being Armchair Anonymous. ekothbauer@wisc.edu

Julie Manikas

Julie Manikas, Vilcek Graduate Student

Julie is interested in exploring how endodermal cells remodel germ cells during early development. She received her B.S. in Biochemistry from Syracuse University where she studied how Rab GTPases orchestrate cilia development in zebrafish. When not in the lab, Julie enjoys going for long runs and exploring NYC for new coffee shops. julie.manikas@nyulangone.org

Lauren Meyer

Lauren Meyer, Vilcek Graduate Student

Lauren is studying the process by which the excretory cell is initially formed.  She received her B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Johns Hopkins University where she contributed to the construction of an artificial S. cerevisiae genome.  In her spare time Lauren enjoys practicing yoga, gaming, honing her archery skills, and listening to Broadway showtunes. lauren.meyer@nyulangone.org

Jeremy Nance, Principal Investigator

Jeremy is interested in how cell movements and shape changes sculpt tissues, organs, and embryos.  He obtained his PhD at the University of Arizona with Sam Ward studying morphogenesis of C. elegans sperm, and as a postdoc with Jim Priess, began investigating mechanisms of cell polarization and gastrulation in C. elegans embryos.  Jeremy is an avid birder, hit-or-miss gardener, yoga nut, and loves exploring outside around Madison and the western Great Lakes. jfnance@wisc.edu
